Why do womens running shoes need to be different from mens running shoes?

There are a few, significant differences between mens and womens when it comes to their running bio-mechanics. It is important to know and understand them, in order to select a shoe that better helps a female runner, since a woman’s body is (luckily) significantly different than a man’s.

Let’s review a list of the most important and the solutions running companies are implementing to address them.

1. Women have a wider Q-Angle.

The Q-Angle is the angle of incidence of the quadriceps muscle relative to the patella (see picture).

Women have usually larger hips rather than men. This means a wider Q-Angle. As a consequence of the wider angle, women tend to pronate more than men.

For this reason it is very important that while engineering a womens running shoe, the designers and developers take this into consideration and work on addressing this by having a different midsole/outsole on the womens version, a combination of shapes and materials that can offer women the extra support they need.

2. Women’s Body Mass is Lower.

Statistically, women have approximately 15% less body mass than men with the same foot size. This means that when designers calculate how much bouncy the foam material in the midsole (for example) needs to be, they have to take into account the fact that for the same shoe size, the womens version should be lower and/or softer, as it would have to sustain 15% less of the impact.

3. Women’s Feet Have a Different Shape.

Men have broader and longer feet than women of their stature. Results show that women’s feet have different shape characteristics than men’s, especially in the arch, the first toe, the lateral side and the ball of the foot. This should should be considered when designing sports shoes for women.

While the previous points had impacts on the way a shoe’s sole unit had to be built, this point is about the upper.

Winter can be a busy time – with Christmas looming, New Year’s Eve to celebrate and Valentines Day just around the corner you’re going to need to be prepared. So what’s the right winter fashion etiquette for the occasion?

Get together in the near future?

A re-union? Try something in a festive jewel tone and be sure to finish your look with some fabulous shoes and hand bag and don’t forget the jewelry. Add earrings and a necklace to finish your look.

A baptism – you’re the godmother? Try a soft flowing skirt and a cap sleeve blouse. Or how about a nice light shift topped with a print jacket. You’ll look stylish but you won’t be over done. Pay attention to the shoes on your feet – classy but comfort is important because you’ll be standing for a while. Add some light jewelry, a pair of baguette studs and a chain and you’ll be ready.

A date for high tea? Although the formality of white gloves is gone it is still important to dress nicely. Do not wear jeans or a sloppy shirt. If the high tea is an informal meeting then pants with a nice light jacket is spring colors is appropriate. If high tea is to honor someone then step it up a notch with a nice light skirt and top, or a nice light dress with jacket. Some funky jewelry for the casual get together or more elegant jewelry for the more formal get together.

Cocktails? There are plenty of options for cocktails. A light weight dress in spring colors with short sleeves, dress it up a little with three quarter sleeves. Go for a fun print, v necklines are great, and don’t forget the finishing touches with jewelry. Try some dangle or chandelier earrings. Add a tennis bracelet or bead necklace, some fun but sexy shoes and your set.

Wedding? Make certain you’re not resembling the bride or taking away from her day by outdoing her. Contrary to popular belief black is an acceptable color for a wedding. Decide what you’re wearing to the wedding based on the type of wedding – is it formal choose a formal dress. Semi casual – skirt and blazer. Beach wedding – something soft and flowing. Add appropriate jewelry, shoes, and handbag.

Christmas Something comfy but semi-formal is always great. Depending on the type of festivities and where you’ll be choose appropriate footwear. Slip on flats are nice around the house or you can choose a sassy pair of heels. Don’t forget to make your handbag say “Merry Christmas.”

New Years Eve This season is filled with soft flowing feminine looks. So here’s a perfect time to be a girl. Try an ankle length tiered dress with silky layers in a romantic print. Or perhaps a long flowing skirt accented with a fitted top and cashmere sweater. Add a pair of heels and a small matching bag. Don’t forget to finish your look with your jewelry – soft colored stone dangle earrings and a teardrop pendant would be perfect!

Evening Out? Pick your favorite pants, skirt, or dress, add a bolero or cardigan over a tank or sleeveless blouse you’ll be ready for your evening out. Make your bolero or cardigan your focal point. Add some understated jewelry and your ready to go.

Whether it’s a day at the beach, a board room meeting, a cocktail party, or a formal event. Dress to impress, complete your look with jewelry and accessories such as shoes, hand bag, or belt. Make your fashion statement!

Yes, I know. Christmas was just a few days ago. However, that season is for everyone on your shopping list, including friends, family, coworkers, bosses, and whoever you decide remember at the Yule tide.

On the other hand, February 14th is just for two people- you and the one you love more than any other human being on the planet. So, mark your calendars today, because Valentine’s Day is only seven weeks away.

A day set aside for sweethearts, Valentine’s is definitely a day you do not want to forget. In addition, you most assuredly should not purchase a household item in remembrance. For example, how excited will your special lady be, if you decide to buy her a new small appliance? Even if it has all the latest technological advances, and will ultimately make mealtime less time consuming, will she be excited?

Probably not.

Valentine’s Day is the time for intimate gifts that will bring back precious memories, draw you closer together as a couple, and be a symbol of love and devotion. The latest kitchen gadget does not meet any of the criteria for a sweetheart gift. For many, it says “chores”.

Instead, you can say “I love you” with a poem. If poems are not your style, write a note expressing your love. Attach the note to personal clothing or intimate wear designed to make her Valentine’s Day a little extra special. For example, charmeuse is popular evening wear. From the revealing wear to a pajama set for lounging on a lazy evening, she will feel loved on the day set aside for couples.

From fabulous food and fine wine to elegant fragrances and amazing clothes, the French have long been known for their decadent luxuries. Champagne was invented here, as was haute couture. Then there’s the chocolate, paintings, and dare I say it? Kisses. Small wonder exports and tourism are staples of the French economy.

So with easy access to some of the world’s most desirable goods, you’d think every French woman would have a big waistline and a huge closet. But they don’t. Just as “French Women Don’t Get Fat,” (according to author Mireille Guiliano), chic Parisiennes don’t have closets full of clothes. They don’t need them.

The secret is moderation.

Paris was first settled as a fishing village more than two thousand years ago. While it’s been burned, rebuilt, invaded, and occupied many times since then, the core of the city is still hundreds of years old. The roads are narrow, the buildings are old, the apartments are small. So are the closets and bathrooms. Full size refrigerators are scarce and weekly food shopping trips are unheard of. Where would you put a week’s worth of groceries? For that matter, where would you store a season’s worth of clothes?

You wouldn’t.

You’d keep a small inventory of staples and add new things with care. If you buy something new, something old has to go. There just isn’t space for both.

So how can French women be so chic when they can’t buy new things all the time?

They:

1. Learn what styles look good on them (and which don’t) early on

2. Buy a handful of good quality, neutral-colored staples that they can mix and match with each other for maximum wear

3. Add one or two new trendy pieces each season and wear them out

4. Invest in high quality everyday bags and shoes

5. Have one or two high end scarves or other accessories that they wear all the time

6. Get a facial every month to keep their skin looking good

7. Maintain a fuss-free hairstyle

8. Pay cash for everything

The French, like the Germans, have a history of saving and are adverse to personal debt. To stay in budget, they don’t do a lot of impulse buying, and they indulge in their local luxuries very little or in moderation. Why buy a dozen handbags in different shapes and colors when one in a neutral, basic shape does the trick?

What? Too boring, you say? Not enough variety?

Not true!

All it takes is a little imagination.

Start with basic pieces that look good on you. Find tops that fit, jackets that flatter, and pants and skirts that feel and look good.

Then study the latest fashion magazines and websites to see the latest trends. Try to re-create or simply evoke the look with pieces you ALREADY HAVE in your closet. You may just need a new jacket or some updated pants to look current. Or, maybe a new, trendy accessory can breathe new life into your old favorites. You don’t have to follow every trend. Learn which styles look best on you and just update them as the seasons pass. Or, pass them by if they don’t flatter.

This simple mantra is how the French look chic AND still manage to live within their budgets and with their miniscule closets. You can too. You don’t have to have a big budget or a lot of clothes to dress well. All it takes is a little practice and creativity. Learn what styles look good on you, choose your pieces wisely, and wear them in many different ways until they wear out.

Or, in the words of designer Jil Sander, “Think more, buy less.”

If promotional product marketing is a big part of your campaign, it means it’s the right time for you to think about co-branding. In essence, co-branding is putting your brand name juxtapose to a more popularly branded promotional product. For instance, instead of just giving away a “generic shirt” with your logo on it, you could place your name on an Adidas, an Izod or a Nike shirt.

Co-branding is a great way to boost brand recognition. Especially true for newer companies, riding on the existing market share of the bigger brands gives your brand a better fighting chance.

The alliance between two brands can also offer clients better value. Long established brand items are often of better quality than generic ones. As such, clients get more out of a co-branded promotional item than they would with one that isn’t. As an off-shoot of this, the credibility of the established brand is transferred onto yours.

Is it really worth it?

A classic example of successful co-branding is the LiveSTRONG(TM) baller bands, the Lance Armstrong-Nike union created a new breed of promotional marketing unlike any other. What started as a simple fund raising tool for the Lance Armstrong Foundation is now a fashion statement, a symbol for a good cause, a bearer of hope and of course a great marketing tool.

Today, it has gone far beyond its original purpose of raising enough money and awareness to support the fight against cancer. The original $5million goal has been surpassed more than five times over.

In addition, it has become such an iconic piece that it is now being re-sold everywhere at inflated prices. Even non-traditional channels like eBay are carrying the product. While the phenomenal spread of the bands don’t always help out with its original cause (such is the case of reselling), it is nonetheless an amazing embodiment of the power of co-branding.

Choosing the right co-brand partner

When using the co-branding strategy for promotional products, choose a brand that you believe in. Find one with concepts that are pretty much aligned with your company’s.

You should also consider your marketing stance carefully. While a great strategy, co-branding might backfire if the partner brand you choose overshadows your own. Decide whether you are going to aggressively market the promotional product as a brand product or if you should just casually mention it to your clients.

Saying that the giveaway pen is a Cross Pen or a Parker and forgetting to mention your own brand –or much worse placing your logo and brand name too inconspicuously — just might make them forget that the item came from you in the first place.

The bottom line: Know the power of co-branding, but like all powerful things, learn to use it wisely.
